175 years of cruising
P&O Cruises, an iconic cruise brand, turns 175 this year. That’s a ripe old age, and we wanted to help the company celebrate in 21st-century style. So we worked with it to develop an online destination that informs new, existing and potential passengers about P&O Cruises’ fantastic heritage while working hard to evoke joyous memories for cruise passengers.
The site is based on an interactive timeline that enables users to browse the history of the brand by ship and sailing date, and is seeded with great stories and pictures from P&O Cruises’ extensive archive. What’s more, we gave users the ability to create their own profiles and add their own stories and pictures to the timeline – allowing them to reminisce about the great times they’ve had aboard P&O Cruises ships, connect (or reconnect) with other passengers and start conversations with other users. We also integrated the site with Facebook to allow users to log in and share their stories on the world’s biggest social network, to extend the reach and utility of the site for the audience.
The site, 175yearsofcruising.com.au is very new and shiny, so we’d love you to take a look and let us know what you think. And if you’ve been on a P&O Cruises holiday, feel free to log in and share your stories!

I was twelve, when my cruising aunt and uncle took me out of school to Cruise on the SS Oronsay in 1958. I remember shared bathroom/toilets, round portholes, pipes in the cabin and diving for spoons. The ports of call were Brisbane ? Hayman Island, Green Island, possibly Cairns, and tender boats in Noumea. I recall tasting a fish called Hallibut and liking it. My next cruise was 1984 with my young family on the Canberra after its decommissioning from the Faulklands war. I have my Aunts P&O L N Co .photo album with a a picture of RMS Mongolia 16,600 tons inside the front cover. ah memories !

Vance, that’s a great story. You should post it on the 175 years of cruising website – you might be able to find others who were on the Oronsay!
